How My Reading Habits Have Changed Over Time

Hello! Today I am doing another Top Ten Tuesday which was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.

Todays topic is how my reading habits have changed over time and I have to say that I thought this was going to be a lot easier than it was! I struggled thinking of so much, but its so interesting to see what has changed over time.

1 – I used to only read Young Adult books, and now its very much shifted into reading adult.

2 – I used to only either read YA fantasy or YA contemporary, and now I am open to reading more genres and experimenting a little more

3 – I never used to DNF books, and now I am more than happy to put a book down if it is not working for me at that time. Sometimes, I am a little too quick to DNF a book, but I do also believe that timing is a key thing. I can pick up a book and really dislike it, put it down, and then in a few months or even a year, read it again and really enjoy it.

4 – When I was younger, I would read 90% of books on my Kindle, and then I shifted into just reading physical copies, then I shifted into reading 90% of books on audiobook. Now I have a balance of all three going, so I expect this to shift again!

5 – I didn’t like rereading books before. I always felt like that time could be used to read new books. This has drastically changed, and I reread a lot now! I love the comfort than a book you’ve read multiple times can bring. I reread so much now that I have previously done posts dedicated to it at the end of the year as part of a wrap up. (2020 & 2021)

6 – I was never interested in non-fiction books and this year, I have read so many – more than I thought I ever would.

7 – I always focused on reading the backlog of books instead of newer releases. Now I am the complete opposite and the new releases make up the majority of my wrap ups.

8 – I have learned that TBRs just do not work for me. I used to always make long lists and try to strictly stick to them, but I would always end up in a reading slump. Now, I tend to think of books based on the season, and have a list of books I could read, but its not strict, so if I don’t feel like reading that book, then I do not need to read it.

9 – I unhaul books now and sell them on Vinted. I never used to be able to get rid of any of my books, but I have realised that there is no point holding onto that YA book that I am just never going to read or keeping that book series that I really did not like – the space on my shelves can be used for books I enjoy more!

10 – And lastly, I don’t tend to binge read a series anymore. When I was younger, I would devour huge series, one book after another within a few days to a week. I don’t tend to have the time anymore to do nothing but read lengthy series. The last time I did was with the Throne of Glass books during the third lockdown! This is something I miss, and I’m envious of my younger self for!

DNFing is a challenge for me too! I’ve been getting better at it this year.

I’m glad you’re getting better at it! No point wasting time on a book you’re not enjoying

Being more ready to DNF books seems to be turning up on quite a few lists today. I do, but still find it hard.

I don’t think I’ll ever read a nonfiction book, but sometimes I feel like trying. I love binging big series though, but perhaps that’s because I have the time. I loved reading about your reading habits 🙂

Thank you! I didn’t think I would ever read a nonfiction book either but I’ve read quite a few this year and they’ve been nice! They have also really helped me stay out of a reading slump

I am just the opposite. I stopped reading a variety of genres.

I have no objection to rereads, I just don’t have the time. Sometimes I pick up a book, start reading and realize I already read it (why I blog and track now) and then shut the book and move on.

Selling your books is a good idea!

Oh interesting! If you found a genre you like and it’s keeping you interested then no point in changing it up

I’ve shifted away from rereads and the YA genre, too.

I love it when you can binge read a series. It’s so satisfying being able to take a detailed story and read it from start to end. Now I’m retired, its much easier to find the time to do this

I have always liked to reread, as I read fast, when I reread sometimes I find new things or interpret it differently.

I’ve also shifted away from the YA genre lately. DNF’ing more quickly is something I still need to work on though. And re-reading is something I’ve always loved to do, though how much of it I do can change too.

Rereading old comforts is just so fun! I’ve done it less this year to be honest but it’s nice knowing they’re waiting for me

That’s fair! I think you have to think of it from an enjoyment perspective – if you’re not enjoying it, why continue it?

There are times you have to walk away from a book because it isn’t the time for you to read it. I’ve put a few books down because I wasn’t enjoying them. But when I went back to them a year or so later and loved them.

I don’t do well with a TBR either…like I pretend that I’m going to stick to a list and make one, and then the mood strikes to read something else, so I just do that. I saw another blogger once refer to her “TBR” as a possibility pile. Basically books get metaphorically tossed on the pile and it’s possible she’ll pick it up to read it. And I really like that idea because it’s more fitting for my reading style.

I hope you have a great week.

I’m with you on #4 (except that e-reading didn’t exist when I was a kid because I’m OLD). I like a balance. I still read mostly print books, but I also read a fair amount of e-books and listen to lots on audio. It works well for me, too.

    Happy TTT!

I love how most of us move to different genres – I related to DNF more and find more nonfictions!

DNF-ing seems to be common across a lot of lists – I’m still working on that though! I also read more non fiction in recent years.

I love posts like this because I get to know a little more about the people we interact with and realizing how many changes we have in common! My reading is almost entirely adult with the occasional YA or MG nowadays, and the joy of rereading an old favorite and discovering something new every time is like getting under a warm, fluffy blanket on a cold night.
