Monster Mash Book Tag

Hello! I am a few days late with my spooky book tag for this week, but better late than never! I found this book tag on Heather @ The Sassy Book Geek’s blog and was originally created by Spine Breakers on Youtube! Every year, I lowkey forget that there are songs related to Halloween… for some reason, I think that there are only seasonal songs for Christmas and every year I am surprised that I enjoy the Halloween songs. So I thought this tag would be perfect for me to do to remind me about the Halloween songs ahead of Halloween next weekend!

“I was working in the lab late on night” – What’s a book that kept you up at night?

So, so, so many! But the first one that came to mind was When the Curtain Falls by Carrie Hope Fletcher. This was a book that I looked up from the pages to see that it was darkness and the clock showed it was 3am. Totally worth it.

“My eyes beheld an eerie sight” – What’s the weirdest or creepiest thing you’ve ever read in a book?

Because I spoke about it recently… *Throne of Glass spoilers* in Empire of Storms/Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas when Aelin is imprisoned in that iron coffin. That is one of the creepiest things I have ever read. I felt trapped along with Aelin when I was reading it.

“Get a jolt from my electrodes” – Name a book that completely shocked or surprised you

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green was one that really surprised me. I was not expecting to love that novel as much as I did. I have always been a bit 50/50 with John Green’s novels. I either love them or hate them, so going into the novel I wasn’t sure how I would feel. But Turtles All the Way Down has become one of my favourite novels. If you want a little more on why check out: 24 Books I Love.

“The guests included Wolfman, Dracula, and his son” – Name you favourite monster or villain from a book

I never know how to answer this question… I might cheat slightly and put The Queen of Hearts from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but more specifically from Heartless. I think it is a little bit cheaty but I am going to stick with it regardless!

“Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist?” – Name a book that was super hyped when it came out, but no one talks about anymore

This one took me a moment to think, but I think I will go for Under Rose-Tainted Skies by Louise Gornall. I feel like when this book came out, it was really hyped. It was featured in so many videos on my favourite Booktuber channels and I saw it loads on bookstagram. I hardly ever see anything about the novel anymore. Sadly, the author passed away last year after a long battle with cancer and they never wrote another novel other than Under Rose-Tainted Skies. But what an incredible novel to have as their only novel.

“They did the mash.” – Name your favourite book that is a mash up of two or more genres

I feel like a lot of my favourite novels are kind of a mash up of multiple genres. I am going to pick House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas which is a mash up of fantasy and mystery and romance.

“It was a graveyard smash” – What is your favourite horror novel?

I am a wimp when it comes to horror novels, so I haven’t actually read enough of these to have a favourite!

“The scene was rockin’, all were digging the sounds” – What’s your favourite song based on a book?

I cannot think of a song that is based off of a book, however I have had a post in my drafts for a long time about songs I associate with books for no reason. So I will give you a little taste of that post and pick State of Grace by Taylor Swift (side note: cannot wait for Red (Taylor’s Version)) which I associate with The Road Trip by Beth O’Leary. I don’t know why I associate this song and this book, but I do!

“Tell them Boris sent you” – What’s your go-to book recommendation?

Okay this is a difficult one to answer because I base this off of genre, but right now I would recommend:

  • Fantasy: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas or A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown
  • Romance: The Brown Sisters Trilogy by Talia Hibbert or The Road Trip by Beth O’Leary
  • Historical Fiction: Lovely War by Julie Berry or The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Bonus Question: What’s your favourite thing about Halloween?

Pumpkin carving and Haunted House decorating! Every year, my youngest sister and I get gingerbread houses and decorate them into haunted houses. It was a tradition we started a few years ago and it has become one of my favourite things every year. Both my sisters and I will also carve pumpkins every year, and I love that too, even if it is just endless hours of us arguing over who’s is best.

I don’t mind scary if it belongs to Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter- than that’s it

Welcome to my cosy corner of the internet dedicated to anything book-ish related. I am an avid reader, who is constantly battling a reading slump. On here, I share my chaotic, rambling thoughts of all of the books I have read and want to read, offering my unsolicited thoughts. Occasionally, I will share my own work whether that is my poetry or progress updates as I write my own Fantasy novels.
