Hello! Today I wanted to talk about some of the disappointing reads of 2021. I have had a really great reading year this year, but there have been some books along the way that I was a little disappointed by. All of these books on this list, I enjoyed, but I think I had a little too high expectations going into the books.
Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron
This is what I mean when I say I had too high expectations heading into this book. I really liked this book! I thought it was an original idea and a great take on a retelling. However, I had expected it to be a 5 star read for me but it really ended up being a 4 star read. Still a great book, but I was just disappointed with some of it. It also did not help that I didn’t mesh well with the writing style.
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
This book has been so hyped up, that I think it was just bound to be a disappointment. Especially as I already had started this one last year during the Easter Readathon, but then put it down for a whole year. I started it again when I read it this year, but still I could not seem to enjoy it as much as everyone else did. Which ultimately left me a little bit disappointed.
The Meeting Point by Olivia Lara
I read this one in August, and actually took part in the Blog Tour for this one! I was in a romance mood, so I was really looking forward to this one. But, I was so disappointed by it. The first quarter of the book felt like a really long prologue and I felt like I didn’t get to know any of the characters. And the main character was so whiny – I didn’t enjoy it unfortunately, and I really though I was going to.
Roman and Jewel by Dana L. Davis
I think the main reason that I did not enjoy this one as much as I thought was because it was young adult. This year I have found myself moving further away from young adult and not enjoying it anywhere near as much as I used to. I did still enjoy it, but I wished that there was more of the things I did like such as the musical parts of it. You can read my review here: Roman and Jewel.
Sixteen Scandals by Sophie Jordan
When you put off reading an ARC for a year, and then it wasn’t as good as you were hoping, it sucks. Like Roman and Jewel, I think that it being YA was the main reason why I didn’t like it. I didn’t find it a very memorable read either which I think is also why I am disappointed by it. You can read my review here: Sixteen Scandals.
So there are all of the books that were slightly disappointing for me this year. Again, I did enjoy all of these – I didn’t rate any books below 3 stars, but there was just something missing for me. Most of these are down to my own high expectations.
What was one book that disappointed you this year?
Great post! I also was sadly not a huge fan of Red, White, and Royal Blue. I wanted to like it so so badly, but I didn’t really love any of the characters, besides the main character’s sister.

Thank-you! I’m glad I am not the only one who wasn’t a huge fan. I also found a hard time connecting with the characters.
