Hello! Today I am taking part in another Top 5 Tuesday. Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, but now it is hosted by Meeghan at Meeghan Reads. This week we are moving out of spooky season and the spooky season prompts and beginning the month of talking about tropes in books, and this week is the tropes I can’t get enough of. I thought this week would be easy, but I struggled with this one a lot more than I thought!
Enemies to Lovers
Kicking this off with probably my favourite trope of all and that is the enemies to lovers trope. For whatever reason I cannot get enough of this trope! All of my favourite novels have the enemies to lovers trope and I am pretty much sold instantly on a novel if it says it enemies to lovers. Although – I do prefer this in fantasy novels rather than in contemporary novels. Sometimes I feel like in contemporary novels it isn’t a good enough reason to why they were enemies? But obviously in fantasy stakes are higher, so it makes more sense to me. I don’t know if that’s weird.
The Mentor
Leaning a bit more into fantasy specific tropes now – the mentor. I love it when a character, usually in young adult novels, have to look up to an older character and be guided through their problems. It is such a lovely trope in my opinion, because you gain a different perspective. An older perspective that the protagonist is likely to ignore.
The Secret Heir
I love this trope. I think it can be overdone, but I still love it. I think this trope is even better when the character knows they are the heir, but other people don’t and not even the reader knows yet. I find it so fun, and these usually come in big series, which I enjoy even more because then we really get to fall into the stories and bond with the characters before they become the heir.
Fake Dating
This a relatively new trope to me and I haven’t read too many books with this trope in, but the ones I have I really enjoyed! There is something about the yearning but neither one of them wanting to show that they are into each other, because it is all ‘fake’. I just love knowing things before the characters, I guess.
Second Chance Romance
Another new one for me! I had never really given this trope a thought until recently. I have read a few books recently like The Meeting Point by Olivia Lara, and You and Me on Vacation by Emily Henry, and The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling and have really adored them. The latter two especially are in the running for making it onto my top ten books of the year!
Let me know what tropes you can’t get enough of. Did you have an easier time with this weeks prompt?
