Top 5 Spooky Worlds

Hello! Today I am taking part in another Top 5 Tuesday. Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, but now it is hosted by Meeghan at Meeghan Reads. Today’s topic is spooky worlds. A couple of weeks ago I spoke about the five horror tropes that don’t scare me, and if you have seen that post, you may remember that I spoke greatly about how I am a wimp when it comes to horror films and I have barely dipped my toe into horror novels.

At first when I read the prompts for this month, I wasn’t sure if I could take part in this one because do I really know that many spooky worlds? And then I started thinking about fantasy, and more specifically moments in fantasy books that had spooky rooms or situations that scared me.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

Throne of Glass Spoilers – specifically Empire of Storms and Kingdom of Ash

At the beginning of Kingdom of Ash, Aelin is imprisoned in an iron coffin. This whole idea and premise freaks me out so much. She also had an iron helmet on and was shackled and was truly captured in a torture device which gave me the creeps when I first read it.

The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant

I am terrible at retaining information after I read a book – especially a book that I have read only once, and this book is no exception unfortunately. However, one thing I do remember about this novel is the beautiful, yet utterly gruesome, descriptions of The Court of Miracles and the catacombs. A really spooky place.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire

This is my favourite of the Wayward Children’s series that I have read so far, but that does not mean that I am not spooked out by the land, as Goodreads puts it, filled with mad scientists and death and choices. It is such a good novel, but I want it to stay in novel format and I definitely do not want to visit.

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

If you have read Scythe it will not be a question why this series is included on this list. In case you are not familiar with the series, it takes place in a world where everyone is immortal, but people still die. There are Scythes that are recruited to take lives (based on statistics from before everyone became immortal) in order to stop overpopulation. It is a really spooky place, and I would not want to live there.

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

The kingdom in Cinderella is Dead sounds like a horrible place to live. It gives me spooky vibes because it is so restrictive and horrible and the King is really creepy. *spoiler* Plus, that moment when Cinderella awakens gave me goosebumps it was so spooky.
