Hello! Today I am taking part in another Top 5 Tuesday. Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, but now it is hosted by Meeghan at Meeghan Reads. Today’s topic is horror tropes that don’t scare.
I am someone who is scared pretty easily, so I am not sure how this one is going to go! I don’t read many horror books, in fact I think I have only read one or two. My main thing is that when I am watching a horror film or reading a horror book, I will just put myself in the story. So all of the bad things that are happening to the characters, I would feel like it is happening to me. It means that pretty much everything now frightens me.
Blood and Gore
Blood and gore doesn’t particularly scare me. I know that it is probably meant to gross me out and also scare me, but I don’t find it scary at all. I think I just expect it, so there isn’t a fear factor.
Monsters
The traditional monsters like vampires and werewolves and zombies don’t scare me. I think because I grew up seeing these creatures in ’nicer’ settings, that I don’t see these historically scary beings as scary anymore. They are also usually depicted so differently from story to story yet have this familiarity too, so I love seeing how different authors portray them.
The Abandoned Place
I suppose I find this trope a little bit creepy, but I wouldn’t say that it is a trope that scares me. I actually really like this trope, because I like the idea of removing obstacles like other people or convenient objects that would usually be in the setting to help the characters.
Clowns
I have never understood clowns. I have never found them funny or happy or scary. They have just kind of been there for me. I find it to be quite an odd trope. I think that they are supposed to be a trustworthy figure, so that it is easy for them to lure victims when they go bad. But for me it has just always been weird. I do however admire the way the scary clowns look – they do look scary, but I don’t often find their storylines scary.
Possessed/Cursed Object
Dolls are the worst one for me. Maybe Annabelle ruined it for me, who knows. It tends to pull an eye roll out of me. Although I do kind of like the possessed amulet one, but it still doesn’t scare me but does intrigue me.
So if anything this post has just been a ’it doesn’t scare me, but intrigues me’ kind of post.
I just read Meeghan’s post for this week and I share a lot of her thoughts! It appears that I have maybe just read too many fantasy novels to even recognise that ‘Demon Possession’ or ’Necromancy’ can also be considered horror and not just elements to all of my favourite fantasy novels!!
Some tropes that do tend to scare me though are things like the vengeful spirit or jump scares and creepy music in films. I never used to be scared of jump scares, but lately I have been getting really scared by them!
Let me know what horror tropes don’t scare you!
