Five Hyped Books I Love

Hello! Today I am taking part in another Top 5 Tuesday. Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, but now it is hosted by Meeghan at Meeghan Reads. This weeks topic is hyped books that I love. I love so many hyped books, but I am going to try and talk about ones I talk about less – I still talk about these books a lot. I guess by this I just mean I am not going to talk about the really obvious ones by Cassandra Clare of Sarah J Maas.

Turtles All The Way Down by John Green

Turtles All the Way Down is John Green’s latest fiction novel. It came out in 2017, and as it is a John Green novel, it was of course very hyped up. I was a bit apprehensive about going into this one. I have been a bit 50/50 with John Green’s books – I either love them or hate them. Turtles All the Way Down, however, I loved! I was surprised at how much I related to the novel and how much it has come to mean to me. It was the first book that I have read where the main character obsessively picks at their skin. As someone who constantly has to wear plasters and who’s fingers are covered in many, many scars form this, it meant a lot that I finally could relate to a character in a novel. Aza Holmes is in a constant spiral of her thoughts and the story allows us to follow Aza as she navigates her daily life.

The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

I could have honestly put any Beth O’Leary novel on this list. The Road Trip is my favourite novel by her, but I think The Flatshare is her most hyped novel! The Flatshare follows Tiffy and Leon. Tiffy needs a cheap flat and fast; Leon needs the cash and works nights. Without meeting, they come to an agreement that Leon would occupy the flat during the day whilst Tiffy is at work and Tiffy would get the flat in the evenings when Leon was at work. It was a perfect agreement.

I went into this novel expecting a cute, funny romance read. It was these things, but it had a lot more depth than I was expecting. It dealt with some really difficult situations whilst still being an enjoyable, happy read. I also adored Beth O’Leary’s writing style and she has a way of writing characters that makes you fall in love with them with every turn of the page.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

It was actually TikTok that inspired me to pick this book up. I find that TikTok talk about the same few books a lot – it is a lot of Sarah J Maas and Holly Black I find with some other really hyped up contemporary books. I don’t know if it is just me but I find that a lot o the contemporary books that I see on TikTok are form 2011 – 2015. Obviously not everyone talks about the same books but I just see a lot of the same. I actually find TikTok so funny. It has been a while since I used to app – although I never used it to post, just lurk.

Anyway, I used the app a lot right before A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J Maas came out and I fell into a hole where I was looking up everyone and their theories about the novel and for the series. I delve further into the adult fantasy world and there was one TikTok that I saw (I can’t remember who by or the exact video, sorry!) that was book recommendations for what to read after A Court of Silver Flames that isn’t Sarah J Maas. One of the books on this list was From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

I went in with very little expectations and it was honestly the best way. Poppy has been selected since birth to usher in the new era by being the Maiden. She is not allowed to be seen and has to wear a veil, she cannot be spoken to or touched. Of course throughout the novel she gets tempted which unleashes this inner battle: either put the kingdom first or herself. I did prefer the second novel in the series and I still need to read the third one, but the first novel was still great!

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

I have spoken quite a bit recently about Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series and how I am so intimidated by the series and how hyped up it has been. I saw how much Heartless was hyped up too, but I think because at the time I was in the mood for Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland retellings and Heartless was the perfect option. I adored this book so much and it definitely lived up to the hype for me. The story acts a prequel to the original story and follows the Queen of Hearts before she was a villain. Highly, highly recommend if you like the original story.

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

It took me a long time to actually get round to reading this one. I love poetry, but I had never read a book written in verse so I was nervous going in to it that I wouldn’t like it as much as everyone else. The story follows Xiomara who discovers slam poetry and uses it as a way to discover more about her family dynamics with religion and to learn more about herself. It is such a wonderful read.
