20 Questions Book Tag

Hello! Last night I came across the 20 Questions Book Tag on Lucy @ SunStarBooks’ blog, and thought it would be really interesting to do. I haven’t done a tag in a while and I am neglecting so many of the ones I have been tagged in right now – sorry about that! None of them are inspiring me in this moment!

1) How many books are too many for a series?

If I am connected with the characters or really invested in the plot – there are never too many books. The Shadowhunter books are some of my favourite books and I loved The Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine which had 15 books in it.

2) How do you feel about cliffhangers?

Love them in the middle of a series, but I do not like it when standalone novels or the last book in a series end on a cliffhanger. In the middle of a series or at the end of chapters, I love them – as painful as they can be sometimes.

3) Hardcover or paperback?

Hardcovers, but I think my book shelves look better with a mixture of hardcovers and paperbacks.

4) Favourite book?

I have always said Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen is my favourite book, but I have not read it in so long and I finally got my hands on a copy of my own, so I am really interested in rereading it to see if that is still the case.

5) Least favourite book?

I hate The Maze Runner by James Dashner – I really did not like that series as a whole.

6) Love triangles yes or no?

It is probably my least favourite trope, but I think I am a little traumatised from 2014/15 when all I did was read books with love triangles.

7) The most recent book you couldn’t finish?

I am always putting books down and then returning to them – genuinely all the time, so I can’t actually remember the most recent one. Maybe The Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh – I just couldn’t concentrate on the novel.

8) A book you’re currently reading?

I am currently reading too many books: A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout, City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare and The Switch by Beth O’Leary.

9) Last book you recommended to someone?

I think the last book I recommended to someone was Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas and Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge. It was a conversation with my sister that covered many subjects, which makes the book choices a little less random.

10) Oldest book you’ve read by publication date?

I have no idea…my university days are such a blur and the only one that comes to mind right now is Ruth by Elizabeth Gaskell which was published in 1853.

11) Newest book you’ve read by publication date?

A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J Maas which came out on 16th February 2021!

12) Favourite author?

Such a cliche, but Sarah J Maas and Cassandra Clare – no other authors have inspired me as much as them and I am so connected to their books and their characters.

13) Buying books or borrowing books?

I get incredibly attached to books and I really don’t like damaged books, so I tend to not borrow books. I also don’t like having to rush through a book to give it back and it usually takes away from my reading experience beau are the entire time I’m anxious about destroying someone else’s book. So buying all the way.

14) A book you dislike that everyone seems to love?

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan Mcguire – I have had a bit of a difficult time with this one. I didn’t like book 1 but I’ve enjoyed all of the ones in the series that I have read since. So, I think later this year, I am going to restart the series and give it another go, because I really loved book 2, but I hated book 1. I think I read book 1 when I was in a reading slump though, so I think that has affected my opinion greatly.

15) Bookmarks or dog ears?

Bookmarks all the way – people who dog ear the pages terrify me.

16) A book you can always reread?

I think City of Bones by Cassandra Clare will be a good one to choose for this. I was having a bit of a rough time on social media this week, so I reached for a comfort read and the first book I thought of picking up was City of Bones and the whole of The Mortal Instruments series to be honest. I don’t think I will ever tire from this book series.

17) Can you read while listening to music?

Yes – I am someone who cannot read in silence. I can read anywhere there is noise. I often have YouTube videos in the background while I am reading. I don’t concentrate on the YouTube videos, but I need them creating noise to be able to focus on reading. It doesn’t really make sense, but it is the only way I can read. Lots and lots of noise.

18) One P.O.V. or multiple?

I always thought I was more of a one P.O.V. kind of reader, but I do think I prefer multiple P.O.V.s. All of my favourite books have multiple P.O.V.s, so I think I am going with multiple.

19) Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days?

I think there is always something special about finishing a book in one sitting, but I think that is also down to just not being able to do it often because of time constraints. I do prefer to read books in one sitting or in one day, but more often than not, I am unable to do so.

20) Who do you tag?

Anyone who wants to take part!

That is that! I am coming to the end of my first draft of the book that I am writing, which is very exciting. It also means that I will have some time to catch up on blogging again, so hopefully see you soon!

That’s amazing you like noise while reading, I’m so easily distracted 🤣 I need to get my answers together for this, I was tagged a few days ago. I’m so bad at keeping up with blog posts atm!

It’s been so many years since I read it, so I honestly can’t remember the specifics😅 but j just remember hating the characters, the relationships and I felt there were so many plot holes. The series as a whole just got worse and worse for me and I specifically remember being on holiday with my friend’s family and finishing the book and then telling everyone not to waste their time with it. I just went and looked on Goodreads to see if I put any thoughts on there (I didn’t) and just discovered that it wasn’t a trilogy and there were two more books – no wonder I thought there were so many loose ends😂

The trilogy is the main story but there are two prequels! One that is about the very beginning of the flare, and then the other is about Thomas and Teresa specifically!

How can you listen to YouTube, whilst reading. Does that not distract you…… also i hate books ending on cliff hangers, they sort of ruin the whole book for me

The opposite, actually! I get so distracted when there isn’t noise. I have to have noise when I do anything- even when I am sleeping. I think cliff hangers ruin books when they are standalones, however in the middle of a book series, I think it jsut makes me more excited for the next book.

        That is so interesting 🧐
Oh yeah cliffhangers within a book is amazing especially when you’re least expecting it but at the end of a standalone is just a nightmare. One that pops to my head is Two can keep a secret!

Such a fun tag! I agree that there can never be too many books in a series when it’s that good! And I am definitely with you on loving Maas and Clare! Hope you’re loving A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire as much as I did!
